Pali Passages Quoted in Day Ten Discourse
Attā-dīpā viharatha,
attā-saraṇā
anañña-saraṇā.
Dhamma-dīpā viharatha,
Dhamma-saraṇā,
anañña-saraṇā.
--Maha-Parinibbana Sutta,
Digha Nikaya, 16.
Make an island of yourself,
make yourself your refuge;
there is no other refuge.
Make truth your island,
make truth your refuge;
there is no other refuge.
Caratha bhikkhave carikam
bahujana-hitāya, bahujana-sukhāya,
lokanukampāya,
atthāya hitāya sukhāya
devamanussānaṃ.
Ma ekena dve agamittha.
Desetha bhikkhave Dhammam
ādikalyāṇaṃ,
majjhekalyāṇaṃ, pariyosānakalyāṇaṃ
sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ.
Kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ
brahmacariyaṃ pakāsetha.
Santi sattā apparajakkhajātikā
assavanantā Dhammassa parihāyanti.
Bhavissanti Dhammassa aññataro.
--Dutiya Marapasa Sutta,
Samyutta Nikaya, VI (I). 5.
Go your ways, oh monks,
for the benefit and happiness of many,
out of compassion for the world,
for the good, benefit, and happiness
of gods and men.
Let no two go in the same direction.
Teach, oh monks, the Dhamma,
which is beneficial at the beginning,
in the middle, and at the end--
both the spirit and the letter of it.
Make known the Noble Life, which is fully
completely [requiring no addition] and pure
[requiring no subtraction].
There are beings with only a little dust in
their eyes
who will be lost unless they hear the Dhamma.
Such persons will understand the truth.
Ye dhammā hetuppabhavā
tesaṃ hetum Tathāgato āha
tesaṃ ca yo nirodho;
evam vādī mahāsamaṇo.
--Vinaya, Mahavagga, I. 23 (40).
Those phenomena arising from a cause,
of these the Enlightened One has told the cause
and also their cessation;
this is the "doctrine" of the Great Recluse.
Paññatti ṭhapetvā visesena passati'ti
vipassana.
--Ledi Sayadaw, Paramattha Dipani.
Vipassana means observing reality in a special
way, by going beyond apparent truth.
Diṭṭhe diṭṭhamattaṃ bhavissati,
sute sutamattaṃ bhavissati,
mute mutamattaṃ bhavissati,
viññāte viññātamattaṃ bhavissati.
--Udana, I. x.
In the seen there will be only the seen;
in the heard there will be only the heard;
in the smelled, tasted, touched there will be
only the smelled, tasted, touched;
In the cognized there will be only the cognized.
So kāya-pariyantikāṃ vedanam
vedayamāno,
kāya-pariyantikāṃ vedanam
vedayāmi'ti pajānāti.
Jīvita-pariyantikāṃ vedanam
vedayamāno,
jivita-pariyantikam vedanam
vedayāmi'ti pajānāti.
--Paṭhama Gelaññā Sutta,
Samyutta Nikaya, XXXVI (II). i. 7.
Experiencing sensation everywhere
within the limits of the body,
he understands, "I am experiencing sensation
everywhere within the limits of the body."
Experiencing sensation whereever there is
life within the body,
he understands, "I am experiencing sensation
wherever there is life within the body."
Iti ajjhattaṃ va kaye kāyānupassī
viharati,
bahiddhā va kaye kāyānupassī
viharati,
ajjhatta-bahiddhā va kaye
kāyānupassī viharati.
Samudaya-dhammānupassī va
kāyasmiṃ viharati,
vaya-dhammānupassī va kāyasmiṃ
viharati,
samudaya-vaya-dhammānupassī va
kāyasmiṃ viharati.
Atthi kayo'ti va pan'assa sati
paccupaṭṭhitā hoti,
yāvadeva ñāṇa-mattāya patissati
-mattaya
anissito ca viharati
na ca kinci loke upadiyati.
Evam'pi kho bhikkheave bhikkhu
kaye kāyānupassī viharati.
--Mahā-Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta,
Digha Nikaya, 22.
Thus he abides observing body in body
intermally;
he abodes observing body in body externally;
he abides observing body in body both
internally and externally.
he abides observing the phenomenon of
arising in the body;
he abides observing the phenomenon of
passing away in the body;
he abides observing the phenomenon of
arising and passing away in the body.
Now his awareness is established,
"This is body."
This is awareness develops to such an extent that
there is mere understanding and mere
observation,
and he abides detached
and does not cling to anything in the world.
This, oh bhikkhus, is how a bhikkhu
really abides observing body in body.
